James G.C. Bothwell mentioned in 1827 partition of estate of his grandfather, Henry Machen, as recipient of one share of the estate, paid to his guardian, Miss Margaret B. Machen, his aunt. Implication is that his father was dead.
In 1855, adminstrators of the estate of James j. Bothwell, noted that James G.C. Bothwell, a lunatic, was the heir of James. Ja. bothwell. (Jacksonville Republican 10/9/1855).
In 1870 Census, James was enumerated in the household of John German in Bartow Co., GA, and noted as insane.
Military notes for James Greenwood Carter (Child 1)
James enlisted in the U.S. Army, 13th Infantry, on July 17, 1847, at the age of 27 for service in the War with Mexico. Discharged 20 Sept., 1847.
Probably not the same James: James enlisted in Phillips Legion Infantry - Company C - The Habersham Volunteers or The Habersham Rifles on 6/25/1861 at age 46 and was discharged 3/29/1862. During the latter part of 1861, the Legion campaigned in the mountains of western Virginia. The weather had been brutal and many men succumbed to measles and typhoid fever.
He paid poll taxes aftrer 1870, 1 in 1871 and the others are thru 1875 in the same Georgia Militia division. Related to John g. Vernonm, who paid poll taxes into the 1890s.
