James served five years apprentiship as an electrician, then worked as a builders labourer then went commercial fishing. He travelledto Norway with his friend David Dempsey and sailed back to
Napier taking 72 days. The skipper got drunk so Jim and his friend took over the boat until the police sorted the problem out. He returned home and met Pauline and they married. They had three children and shifted to Auckland to work as a stellfixer. On returning to Napier he becamea building contractor until taking early retirement in 1998. He injured his neck and saw many doctors, physio, chiropractors, neuroligist, ostiopaths, blood tests and X rays for eight months but to no avail. His symptons were pins & needles, numbness and coldness all over his whole body.
