Notes for Samuel Clarence Bothwell
In 1900 was Marshall of the Supreme Court and executive officer of the Board of Prison Control.

In Cleveland city directory, middle initial given as C. and occupation as reporter for the Penny Press

Was in Maracaibo, Venezuela, 1887-1897 before returning to Ohio Went there as a representative of some Western cattlemen looking for ranch land in Venezuela but after arriving there, he told them it was not a safe investment due to the instability of the government.

Samuel Clarence Bothwell, a private of troop D of the Fifth Regiment of U.S. Cavalry, while riding in the Victory Parade for the Spanish American War, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, spied a lovely señorita on a balcony watching the parade.  He sent his orderly (buck privates in the Rough Riders -- if they could afford -- it had servants) to find out who she was.  He then negotiated a contract with her family to marry her.  Told Teddy Rosevelt that he wanted to stay in Puerto Rico and needed a job.  Teddy asked President McKinley to find him a job and Samuel was appointed U.S. Marshal for Puerto Rico & Marshal of the Provisional Court established in 1898.  In 1900 he became Marshal of the new Supreme Court of Porto Rico (old spelling).  During the Spanish American War he was in the Cuban campaign and participated in the attack at San Juan Hill.
The lovely señorita was Maria Gonzalez, who was watching the parade with her mother and grandmother.  Reportedly, all the male members of the family had perished during the war.  They married and had 12 children, all of who lived to be adults.
by Samuel Todd Bothwell -- Son of Lyman Dutton Bothwell & Grandson of Samuel Clarence Bothwell.
