Notes for John Squire
There is little agreement in the literature regarding John Squire, his birthplace,
his marriage(s), or his children. The name of his wife is variously reported as Sarah Francis or Mary Francis.
John Squire's birthplace is frequently recorded in Internet sources as Cambridge, Middlesex, England. There is no such place, at least at the present time. If the city of Cambridge is correct, then the county is Cambridgeshire.

John Squier (Squire) resided in Reading, Massachusetts, and then in Cambridge, MA, per available records. Various genealogists have indicated he may have been married twice with Sarah being the second wife and the name of the first being unknown but is the mother of the first two children. A John Squier is listed as one of the first settlers on the Gorges Tract and recorded there as early as 1634. He was among artisans sent out by Sir Ferdinando Gorges to build a mill and remained to operate it in York, Maine. John Squier and Nicholas Squier were among these artisans. They disposed of their holdings and left town early. References: History of York, Maine. 2. Genealogy Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire.

Records show that Nicholas was in York, Maine, in 1640 as a fisherman and was associated with Sampson Angier (also spelled Anger). The reference is given as (Lechford 155). There are no further records regarding Nicholas and it must be assumed that he left the area never to return. The name "Nicholas" has not shown up on any other Squier progeny. John Squier also appears as a fisherman and also associated with Sampson Angier. He was recorded in York area in 1642 (Trelawny Papers, 342). The three of them made a joint contract with Thomas Foule of Boston in July of 1640 for the next years fishing. The fish were to be picked up at or near the Isle of Shoals which border Maine and New Hampshire.
