Jean White Jean F. White ASHLAND ŸX Jean Fanchon White died Nov. 11, 2008, in Palo Alto, Calif. She was born in Ashland on Sept. 9, 1920, to Leon Hosea White and Fanchon Goodfellow White, both from families who were long time area residents. She attended grade school at District 5 north of Ashland. The family moved to California where she attended high school. She graduated from the University of California-Berkeley in 1942, becoming a lifelong social studies and American history teacher. She also earned a masters degree from the University of California-Berkeley. She was a dedicated, successful teacher earning respect and endearment of her students, associated faculty and school management. She was an enthusiastic sports fan and political follower. She was involved in some local elections and she remained active upon retirement including grand jury service. She is survived by a niece, Jean Elyse Ogden Schroeter and Jean Elyse's son, William Schroeter, along with several cousins. A graveside service was held on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Ashland Cemetery. Arrangements by Marcy Mortuary, Ashland.

I, Marcus Goodfellow, Born 1945, met Jean White when my Mother, Phyllis Johnson Goodfellow and I went to the Oakland Temple in the 1970's. Jean, and Barbara Ogden, daughter of Robert Goodfellow, both cousins of my father, had a house in Palo Alto, California and we visited them there. They also took us out to visit the last surviving child of James K. P. Goodfellow, his daughter, Elsie, who was living in a nursing home nearby. Elsie was near the end of her life and kept confusing me with my father: She kept looking at me, surprised at how tall I was. (my father was 6ft tall and I was three inches taller.) 20 years or so later my wife Janna and I were in the Bay area and visited them again. Nice folks.

Jean was a small person but a large spirit. She loved history, especially the history of the Western U.S. and our families part in it. She strugled for years with poor health: in the 1990's she and Barbara were coming to visit us in Salt Lake City but the great increase in altitude caused her blood pressure to rise dangerously and they had to turn back; much to the disapointment of both Jean and myself. God bless her.
