Garland Taggart, 67, a cafe operator at Bethany during most of the last 15 years, died Sunday afternoon at a local hospital to which he was admitted the day before.

Mr. Taggart had been critically ill at his home for several months. Indications of what developed into his final illness may have come several years ago. It was some 18 months back he first had surgery. This was at Saint Joseph, where he was operated on a second time. He later had major surgery twice at Kansas City.

Born in the Blue Ridge community, Mr. Taggart was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Taggart. For much of his adult life he was a farmer. Later he operated the Blue Ridge grocery store. At about the beginning of World War II he managed the Iowa line service station on US-69 for a brother, John P. Taggart.

It was after this that he and Mrs. Taggart entered the cafe business here on the south side of the square. The business was moved to a building they bought on East Main street, a half block from the square, and the cafe was operated there except for some lapses when they leased it and took rests, until it was sold recently to Arthur Chambers.

In his young manhood Mr. Taggart was a most promising baseball pitcher, amateur and semiprofessional. The professional ranks probably would have been attained by him eventually if he had not injured his throwing arm in pitching a double-header at Ridgeway.

Mr. Taggart is survived by his wife, Belle, of the home; three sons, Captain Gordon Taggart now with the air force in Germany, Master Sgt. Ferris Taggart of Grandview, Mo., and Jack Taggart of St. Joseph; two daughters, Mrs James Glaze (Grace Hildred Taggart) of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs John Gotschall (Janet Rose Taggart) of Gallatin; two brothers, Vilas Taggart and John P. Taggart, and a sister, Mrs. Charles Klindt (Esther Irene Taggart), all of Bethany.

Funeral services for Mr. Taggart will be a 2:00 o'clock this Wednesday at the Christian Union church near Blue Ridge. The Rev. William Smith of Polo will officiate. Burial will be at Miriam cemetery.
