Was illiterate. Signed his will Oct. 2, 1918, with his mark. Lived in Beaghbarton, Co. Monaghan, had farms there and in Carrickanoran. In addition to John and James, his will indicated he had other children, but they were not named.

It appears George Bothwell had contacted a government office in 1915 regarding the birth dates/ages of John and Jane Lunney and received the following response written on a partial extrtact from the 1841 census on which a list of the names and ages of some of the children of William and Martha Lunney had been noted:

“Memo. When our memo of the 13th was written, your letter of the 4th March containing docket # 1/6 had been by some unaccountable mistake been overlooked. It is the practice in this Department to return all fees in connection with incomplete cases where replies have not been received to our queries within one month. Your letter of the 4th was overlooked and in your case the original fee of 6d was returned according to the customary proceedure.
“Upon receipt of yours of the 15th instant, the whold matter was examed thoroughly and it was discovered that 1/6 ___ to your credit. The family of Lunny has been found in the tld (ed note: townland) of Convoy showing the ages of John and Jane, and a copy extract will be forwarded to you on receipt of 6?, which will bring your fee up to 2/?. The inconvenience to which you have been put is regretted.”

in 1911 was mother of 9, 7 still living.

Marriage witnesses included Ada Bothwell

Enlisted in Lancashire Fusiliers Sept. 5, 1914, served also in military police and Cheshire Regiment, demobilized Jan. 28, 1919.

Had previously served in Royal Irish Fusiliers.
