William inlisted on 3 oct 1862 at Elk Point,Dakota Territory as a private Co. "B", 1 batt'n, Dakota Calvary. He was given $100 bounty of which $8 was retained to pay for a Sharps Carbine and $8 retained to pay for a revolver, He was mustered out 15 nov 1865 at Sioux City,Iowa. Company Muster Roll shows him absent jul and aug 1864, "sick in hospital Ft. Peirce,Dakota Territory"
he was a member of the Masonic fraternity of Pembina lodge #10, A.F. & A.M.
and was burried by them. He had a merchantile business in town for many years until he died.
