Notes for Matthew Allison Goodfellow
Matthew Goodfellow was on the 1880 census living with his son, James K. P. Goodfellow in Mills Co., Iowa. In 1870 he was living near Le Grande, Oregon, a single man, who owned no land but had $500 in horses and farming equipment. In 1860, he and his second wife, Elizabeth, and his son, James K. P., were living in Sarpy Co, Nebraska. In 1850 he and his family appear on two states Census, Iowa and Ohio.
In May of 2011 I recieved via E-mail this regarding Matthew Allison Goodfellow from Helen Mickleburgh of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a great grand-daughter of Matthew and Drucilla Goodfellow through Helen Jane Goodfellow Thomson.
"I remember my father speaking to somebody - I must have been about 7 years old - and saying something like:-'My grandfather was a small politician who did not look after his children...' - he must have been told that by Helen Jane."

6 jan 1903 Hugh was transfured to the goverment hospital for the insane from the Danville Branch National home. The name and adress of his wife--Clara Goodfellow, #3203, Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.

William inlisted on 3 oct 1862 at Elk Point,Dakota Territory as a private Co. "B", 1 batt'n, Dakota Calvary. He was given $100 bounty of which $8 was retained to pay for a Sharps Carbine and $8 retained to pay for a revolver, He was mustered out 15 nov 1865 at Sioux City,Iowa. Company Muster Roll shows him absent jul and aug 1864, "sick in hospital Ft. Peirce,Dakota Territory"
he was a member of the Masonic fraternity of Pembina lodge #10, A.F. & A.M.
and was burried by them. He had a merchantile business in town for many years until he died.

inlisted at Bath Illinois on 1 jan 1862 he inlisted in the 53rd Illinois Infantry, He was discharged 2nd Lt. from co. "E" 30 mar 1865 at Goldsboro North Carolina. He was apointed Corpl. 1 jan 1862, apointed Sgt. 1 nov 1862
promoted to second Lt. 12 jul 1863. He was captured at Jackson Mississippi 12 jul 1863, confined at Richmond,VA. Paroled at City Point, VA. 23 sep 1863
He returned to his regiment and was retroactivly promoted. He was wounded in action 21 July, 1864 before Atlanta Georgia, "he recieved a wound in the right shoulder from a Minie rifle ball producing a severe laceration of the soft parts with extensive consminution of the distal end of the clavicle and ....
of the scapula." "The wound is disposed to reopen upon the ocasion of any undue exertion- has in fact reopened on the march from Atlanta to Savannah."

10 mar 1866 He applied for Invalid Pension at St. Joseph,Buchanan,Missouri
said he was unable to make a living because of his wound and had been working as a book agent. 2 witnesses apeared 1 was Matthew's brother-in-law Edward Miles(also a Buchanan Co. resident)

Notes for James Knox Polk (Child 7)
Enroled on the 20th of march 1862 as a private in company G in the 13th (subsequently 5th) regiment Missouri state Militia Vol. cavalry. He was discharged the 13th of april 1865 at St. Louis Missouri. Since leaving the service he lived 3 years in Missouri 34 years in Iowa and 10 years in Nebraska (this in 1912).

1880 census page 164-165 Mills County, Iowa shows James' parents both born in Pennsylvania, shows Matthew A.'s parents born in Ireland and Pensylvania.
In the 1870 Census of Nodaway twp., Andrew Co., Missouri, page 259, household 111, are James Goodfellow, age 25 who works for the railroad, Alice, his wife, age 17, who keeps house, and their son, Frederick, four months old.
Be nice to know if their "family home" that is mentioned is still standing in Ashland.

Dies December 2, 1916 - Funeral Tuesday Forenoon.James K. P. Goodfellow was born in Wooster Ohio, August 26, 1844. He was reared at the parental home and spent his early boyhood on the farm. The family moved from Wooster in 1850, to Albia, Iowa
In March, 1862, when but 17 years old, he volunteered as a soldier, in the Union army, enlisting in the 5th Missouri cavalry. After serving four years and one month at the front, he received honorable discharge in 1865. On his return, he entered Tabor college, at Tabor, Ia., and later was successfully engaged in teaching in Mills County, Iowa.
On August 6th, 1869, Mr. Goodfellow was united in marriage to Miss Alice M. Hurlbutt, who survives him. From this union were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy. The others, Frederick H., Hugh C., Ralph A., Eunice M., James, Elsie A., Fanchion, and Robert; also one sister, Mrs. Helen Thompson, Argentine, South America; nine grandchildren; nephews, Edward and Joseph Miles; two nieces, Mrs. M. E. Jones, Dennison, Iowa , and Mrs. J. Keenan, Denver, Colorado.
.Mr. Goodfellow removed to Nebraska in 1901, and, excepting the time spent in Cherry County, Nebraska where he was engaged in stock-raising, the family home has been in Ashland.
His last illness was brief and was the result of an inflammation of the veins, from which a clot entered the heart, causing death, Saturday, December 2, 1916. Interment was made in the Ashland cemetery.Out of town relatives attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Hurlbutt, Tabor, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Wilkins, Tabor, Iowa; Mrs. M. E. company G, 23rd reg. Ohio Vol. joined 26 feb 1864, at Wooster,Ohio. He was captured in a battle 24 jul 1864 at Windchester,Virginia. Was confined at Danville, Virginia Prison where he died of desease jan 30 or feb 1 1865 just 2 weeks past his 16th birthday.
