inlisted at Bath Illinois on 1 jan 1862 he inlisted in the 53rd Illinois Infantry, He was discharged 2nd Lt. from co. "E" 30 mar 1865 at Goldsboro North Carolina. He was apointed Corpl. 1 jan 1862, apointed Sgt. 1 nov 1862
promoted to second Lt. 12 jul 1863. He was captured at Jackson Mississippi 12 jul 1863, confined at Richmond,VA. Paroled at City Point, VA. 23 sep 1863
He returned to his regiment and was retroactivly promoted. He was wounded in action 21 July, 1864 before Atlanta Georgia, "he recieved a wound in the right shoulder from a Minie rifle ball producing a severe laceration of the soft parts with extensive consminution of the distal end of the clavicle and ....
of the scapula." "The wound is disposed to reopen upon the ocasion of any undue exertion- has in fact reopened on the march from Atlanta to Savannah."

10 mar 1866 He applied for Invalid Pension at St. Joseph,Buchanan,Missouri
said he was unable to make a living because of his wound and had been working as a book agent. 2 witnesses apeared 1 was Matthew's brother-in-law Edward Miles(also a Buchanan Co. resident)
