Notes for William Goodfellow
William left Centre CO., Pa., in 1816. This was the "Year Without a Summer, World Climate in 1816". QC 981.8 .v65 y43x 1992 edited by C.R. Harington. Another book is Volcano Weather, the story of 1816, the year without a summer, by Henry and Elizabeth Stommel.

Hello Mark!
Nice to hear from you ... I am actually going away for the weekend and will be packing up this afternoon, so I don't have much time to write right now .. but I thought I would send you my notes for William Goodfellow which shows the various sources I have come up with so far. Looks like the dates for the children came from Debbie. Anyway I will write more extensively next week when we get back - we are taking all six children to my 25th college reunion out in Lewisburg! It will be a fun weekend.

William Goodfellow was born in the county of Caven, Ireland, and at the age of ten years he immigrated to America with his parents, two sisters and two brothers; and the family settled in Center County, Pennsylvania. Thence he removed in 1816 to Wayne County, Ohio and operated a farm in Plain Township, where he resided for nearly fifty years. He served as Associate Judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1824 for a term of seven years, receiving his commission from Governor Jeremiah Morrow. His house, situated on the Ashland road, was widely known for its hospitality. In politics and on moral reforms Judge Goodfellow had the fortitude or the fortune generally to work with minorities, as he became early an old line Whig, and was from the first a radical anti-slavery and anti-liquor man. He had the honor of organizing and being President of the first temperance society in Wayne County, and lived to have all of his long debated principles inaugurated in State or National administration or enactments.
For more than half a century he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, most of the time filling various of its laical offices, and in its communion he died in 1864. Miss Jane Allison, three years his junior, became his wife in February 1809, and survived him two years. She was a beautiful character, a sincere Christian, an unobtrusive, discreet and saintly woman. Their children were: Matthew Allison, married Drusilla Culbertson in 1833; Jane, married Rev Jesse Warner 1830, died 1843; Louisa Catherine, married Andrew Glenn 1835, died 1836; NARCISSA, MARRIED JAMES W. Notes for Matthew Allison (Child 1)
Matthew Goodfellow was on the 1880 census living with his son, James K. P. Goodfellow in Mills Co., Iowa. In 1870 he was living near Le Grande, Oregon, a single man, who owned no land but had $500 in horses and farming equipment. In 1860, he and his second wife, Elizabeth, and his son, James K. P., were living in Sarpy Co, Nebraska. In 1850 he and his family appear on two states Census, Iowa and Ohio.

In May of 2011 I recieved via E-mail this regarding Matthew Allison Goodfellow from Helen Mickleburgh of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a great grand-daughter of Matthew and Drucilla Goodfellow through Helen Jane Goodfellow Thomson.

"I remember my father speaking to somebody - I must have been about 7 years old - and saying something like:-'My grandfather was a small politician who did not look after his children...' - he must have been told that by Helen Jane."
Notes for William (Child 6)
He was educated at Norfolk Seminary and Lehigh Collage in PA.
From 1851 to 1854 he was acting president of Illinois Wesleyan.

His home for the last years of his life was 5831 Monroe Ave. Chicago, Illinois.

He went to Buenos Aires in 1857 and worked there for 12 years.
The 1870 Federal Census for Ashland Co., Ohio; the Icorporated Villiage of Ashland, page 32, dwelling #259, family #257, William H. H. Potter, dated 26 July, shows that living with his family are William Goodfellow, age 50, a clergyman born in Ohio; and his wife Mary, age 46, born in Massechusets. This is the son of Wm. Goodfellow of Plain TWP, and later Ashland, who died in 1864.

Hi Debbie and Mark,
I'm attaching a pdf file with the descent line of Luke Dorland and Juliette Goodfellow, if you would like more info let me know. Glad to meet you Mark!
Interesting thoughts on their marriage in Ireland and residence afterwards. Wish I had more info on that to share!

Hi Mark and Gabrielle, I think it's time to bring the two of you together so that we can all share info. Gabrielle, can you provide your family lines down from Juliette and Luke Dorland so Mark and I can add it into our programs? Now- Mark had some musings about the 1767 date for a marriage of David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell> IF this is our Jane (and I also would calculate the odds of Walter Dorland thinking that his grandmother was named Bothwell as astronomical if it weren't the name of his ggrandmother instead) then 17 is a nice age for a girl to marry during that time and they could have either lost babies born before Thomas in about 1774 or they could have left adult children behind in Ireland when they immigrated in 1792. Not uncommon. However, I wonder where they did live after this marriage in Killeshandra because it doesn't appear to have been there. No baptisms of Goodfellow babies in Killeshandra. It looks like this David and Jane couple married there in 1767 and then moved somewhere else. Mark- on the DNA question - I don't know of any Goodfellow descendents from Isaiah's son Summerfield - the male line has completely died out. Same goes for Milton's line. We can try to locate a male descendent from Gideon (hopefully in PA?) or from Emory (moved to Australia). I'll try to track Gideon's line first - I'm finding research in Australia to be a lot more difficult. I am also attaching the marriage record I found on the Irish Family History site, <http://www.irish-roots.ie/>;. There was an article last month in Family Tree magazine about the site. They let you search for free and if you find something promising you can pay per record, which I did for this one. Actually another site that was discussed in that Family Tree issue was Footnote.com, which you may know about already. I am not ready to pay to subscribe as a member yet, but they do have a number of records that are free, including Pennsylvania Archives. I found some Goodfellow (and Allison) references there that were not new to me, but I did not know where the information had come from originally, so it is nice to have the original source. It will be fun to search more for the Bothwell name. Odd that Walter Dorland would have listed her as being from Scotland but family lore does get mixed up over the generations. I'll go back to my info and get back in touch in a couple of days. Obviously Bothwell was a remembered family name- even if it was in the wrong generation. However I got something neat in the mail today, Juliette E. Goodfellow Dorland's death certificate from 1912, Pueblo CO. It was filled out by her son Dr. Walter Lowrie Dorland, with whom she was living at the time of her death. It shows her father as William Goodfellow, b. PA. But it shows the maiden name of her mother as Bothwell and birthplace as Scotland! Her mother was actually Jane Allison, but her grandmother we think may have been Jane Bothwell, as there is a marriage license for David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell in Ireland ... here are my notes from the record I found on Footnote, and I believe you already have... "Church Marriage Record for David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell Date of Marriage: 20/10/1767 Parish/Districk: Killeshandra, Co. Cavan, Ireland Husband: David Goodfellow Wife: Jane Bothwell Denomination: (Both) Church of Ireland Townland Recorded as P. of Killishandra 2008 Irish Family History Foundation" What do you think, perhaps her son had heard about a Jane Bothwell grandmother and got it mixed up with his own grandmother Jane Allison? Juliette was 90 at the time of her death so perhaps she was confused as well. I would be happy to e-mail you a scan of the certificate, or photocopy and send it to you if you would like it for your records. It would be very cool to be able to accept the 1767 Ireland marriage record for David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell as being our David Goodfellow! I've looked over my data on the Goodfellows and David Goodfellow, the father of my Isaiah and your William, died between 1810 and 1816 in Centre Co. In 1810 he was living in Howard Township and I'd love to locate a grave for him. His widow, Jane, moved on to OH with William so David is alone there somewhere. However, if you find any other Goodfellows in a Centre Co graveyard, I'd be interested in them as well. Do you know how far is it from Centre co to Clearfield Co? That's where Isaiah moved to and where he and his wife died. I had her in my notes with teh 1850 census for Luke and Juliette Dorland and did not know how she fit into the family. Wonder why she was living with them? Though I guess that was pretty common back then. (Funny it occurred to me as the economy has tanked in recent months that many families may become extended once again as people can't afford to live alone and end up moving in with close or even distant family members. Only future census will tell the story!) Just a couple minor points on that census record ... I believe it says Juliett E, (rather than Julie ME); also it is Walter L. (not Walter S.), his middle name was Lowrie. I think you have done a great job of learning about the Goodfellows in Ireland, not to mention their early days in PA. I have been trying to research my husband's Irish family on his mother's side and it has been tough going. Have you had any luck identifying the ship they arrived on? I have done some searching online but have not come up with anything unnortunately. Wish I had more on that end of the descent line to share! Is there any research that you know of that needs to be done around Centre Co, PA or the other areas there that the Goodfellows settled? We are preparing to move there in the next months (soon as we finally sell our house). We own land in Union Co. (Lewisburg) and my husband is working there now on weekends. Hi Gabreille, My interest is primarily in the Goodfellow line. William Goodfellow who married Jane Allison was the 3rd child of David and Jane Goodfellow. The others were Thomas, David, an unknown daughter, Isaiah, and Elizabeth. My ancestor is Isaiah who married Mary "Polly" Antes. In 1850 Isaiah and Polly's daughter Henrietta was living with her first cousin Juliette: 1850 Troy, Richland, OH 37/37 Luke Dorlin 35 OH OS Pres Julie ME Dorlin 26 OH Walter S Dorlin 1 OH Henrietta Goodfellow 25 PA (this is d/o Isaiah & Mary) What I'd really like is to push on beyond David and Jane Goodfellow. I know they immigrated from Craven, Ireland in about 1792 with their children but that is about all I know. I haven't even been able to determine Jane's maiden name. What connection are you to the Goodfellows? My cousin Lee Dorland (who got me interested in our family's history about 10 years ago) that the Goodfellow/Matthew Allison line is our only Irish heritage, and especially important to him as his middle name (and our Uncle's) is Allison named for that ancestor. I could give you more material from Juliette Goodfellow/Luke Dorland and on but probably that is too far out from your research. They moved to Hot Springs, NC when they retired and founded a girls college called Dorland Institute, which eventually merged with some other schools in the area and is now Warren Wilson College. I was interested that you have Juliette's deat place as Pueblo, CO. Luke Dorland had died two years earlier (22 Nov 1897) in Springfield, IL at the home of his son. I imagine Juliette was also staying with a relative when she died in CO (must try to track down that certificate now that I know where to look!). My g-grandfather Charles Dorland (Juliette's son) died in the South Colorado General Hospital in Pueblo in Oct 10, 1913 so perhaps that is who she was staying with when she died. This is an interesting bit on Juliette I got from my father's (Wayne Dorland) notes. He had written and published a memoir/history of the Dorland family in 1976, these notes were obtained from his Uncle Harold Green after publication so were not included in the book: Additional notes for Dorland book. Wayne E. Dorland: "Inez [Amelia Inez Dorland, d. of William Gardner Dorland, g-daughter of Luke Dorland and Juliette Goodfellow) indicates that at some point early in her youth she lived for a considerable period with her grandfather, the Rev. Luke Dorland, and her grandmother, Juliette Goodfellow Dorland. She says that Juliette was a rather tall woman, quite free in waving a long bony finger, who was well educated and who had travelled extensively. She apparently had almost as much to do as her husband with establishment of Scotia Seminary and Dorland Institute. She taught the girls sanitation, while Luke taught the men agriculture. Both believed in the students working to pay in a major degree for their education, a concept which still obtains today at Warren Wilson College, the outgrowth of Dorland Institute. Juliette, like her husband, was strongly religious. Inex recalls that there was no cooked food in their home on a Sunday. The Sabbath was reserved exclusively for rest and prayer." I have some more on Matthew Allison if you are interested but perhaps that too gets too far off track for your records. I have a copy of the application by Kathryn Rae Everson Wall using him as her ancestor for joining the DAR, however it is through a different child than my lineage (mine is through Jane Allison, hers is through Frederick Essik Allison. I would be happy to send a copy if you are interested. I will go through my notes a little more carefully this weekend to see what else might be different in my records. Nice to have found you! I am pretty home bound with my research as I have six children aged 3-13, and juggling their activities means I don't have as much time for my own at the moment. Thank goodness for the internet! The link still works (I'll have to keep this email address forever- wish I'd chosen something shorter) and I'd be delighted to have whatever you have. I am descended through that line (William Goodfellow and Jane Allison's daughter Juliette Goodfellow who married Luke Dorland). I have some additional information if you are interested. Also I was intrigued that you have Juliette's middle name as Elenor, I knew her middle initial was "E" but did not know what it stood for! Hope this e-mail still works, and thank you for sharing your hard work on Roots.web. Sincerely, Gabrielle (Dorland) Taylor You have obviously been researching this family line for a long time

Notes for Isaiah R. (Child 8)
History of Henry Co. Illinois shows a meeting of people who organized a unitarian church at Geneseo, 27 oct 1868. Isaiah R. was one of them.
In the 1870 Federal Census Isaiah and Susan with 5 children were living in Chicago's 16th Ward. Isaiah's profession was listed as, " gold pen maker." That same census showed Hugh C. Goodfellow, wife Elizabeth, and baby son William R. in the 12th Ward, and Thomas Miles Goodfellow and family in the 14th Ward. This is a suprise to me because I couldn't find them for a long time. One reason was that Isaiah's name is put down as "Israel" by the enumerator of the census, and the other reason is that they lived in Geneseo, Henry Co.., Illinois, during all other cesus' after they moved there from Ashland, Ohio in the early 1850's. Thats where Susan's parents lived, as far as I know, during the same many decades. As the first note shows, they were in Geneseo in October 1868, which means they'd barely arrived in Chicago in time for the census.
Isaiah Goodfellow was a Worshipful Master of Stewart Lodge #92 A.F.&A.M.(masons). He was a charter member of Modern Woodmen of America, Geneseo camp #40 which was organized 30 june 1884.
Notes for Maria Louisa (Child 10)
Maria's will left her house on the west side of Clarmont Ave. Ashland Ohio ,
to her sister N. G. Boyd of Ashland. The second bequest in her will was "to my niece Miss Fannie Goodfellow the sum of three hundred dollars".
Who is this Fannie Goodfellow; daughter of Isaiah Goodfellow? Daughter of Fannie was the daughter of Isaiah R. Goodfellow, as shown by the 1870 census in Chicago, Illinios. The Federal census of 1880 showed Fannie living with Luke and Juliette Dorland in Twp 12, Cabarrus Co., North Carolina, and employed as a teacher.
The lives of Maria and Narcissa Goodfellow Boyd, her older sister were connected in some interesting ways. Jane Allison Goodfellow was 51 years old when Maria was born, and Narcissa was already 20. After the deaths of William and Jane Goodfellow, and the death of Narcissa's husband James in the Civil War, the sisters lived in Ashland, Ohio, in the house left by their parents, along with Maria's little son, Samuel Leslie Beer. After Maria died in 1879, Narcissa and Samuel stayed on together in Ashland. In the 1880 census Narcissa identified Samuel as her Grandson.
