Hi Mark and Gabrielle, I think it's time to bring the two of you together so that we can all share info. Gabrielle, can you provide your family lines down from Juliette and Luke Dorland so Mark and I can add it into our programs? Now- Mark had some musings about the 1767 date for a marriage of David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell> IF this is our Jane (and I also would calculate the odds of Walter Dorland thinking that his grandmother was named Bothwell as astronomical if it weren't the name of his ggrandmother instead) then 17 is a nice age for a girl to marry during that time and they could have either lost babies born before Thomas in about 1774 or they could have left adult children behind in Ireland when they immigrated in 1792. Not uncommon. However, I wonder where they did live after this marriage in Killeshandra because it doesn't appear to have been there. No baptisms of Goodfellow babies in Killeshandra. It looks like this David and Jane couple married there in 1767 and then moved somewhere else. Mark- on the DNA question - I don't know of any Goodfellow descendents from Isaiah's son Summerfield - the male line has completely died out. Same goes for Milton's line. We can try to locate a male descendent from Gideon (hopefully in PA?) or from Emory (moved to Australia). I'll try to track Gideon's line first - I'm finding research in Australia to be a lot more difficult. However I got something neat in the mail today, Juliette E. Goodfellow Dorland's death certificate from 1912, Pueblo CO. It was filled out by her son Dr. Walter Lowrie Dorland, with whom she was living at the time of her death. It shows her father as William Goodfellow, b. PA. But it shows the maiden name of her mother as Bothwell and birthplace as Scotland! Her mother was actually Jane Allison, but her grandmother we think may have been Jane Bothwell, as there is a marriage license for David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell in Ireland ... here are my notes from the record I found on Footnote, and I believe you already have... "Church Marriage Record for David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell Date of Marriage: 20/10/1767 Parish/Districk: Killeshandra, Co. Juliette was 90 at the time of her death so perhaps she was confused as well. I would be happy to e-mail you a scan of the certificate, or photocopy and send it to you if you would like it for your records. It would be very cool to be able to accept the 1767 Ireland marriage record for David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell as being our David Goodfellow! I've looked over my data on the Goodfellows and David Goodfellow, the father of my Isaiah and your William, died between 1810 and 1816 in Centre Co. In 1810 he was living in Howard Township and I'd love to locate a grave for him. His widow, Jane, moved on to OH with William so David is alone there somewhere. However, if you find any other Goodfellows in a Centre Co graveyard, I'd be interested in them as well. Do you know how far is it from Centre co to Clearfield Co? That's where Isaiah moved to and where he and his wife died. I had her in my notes with teh 1850 census for Luke and Juliette Dorland and did not know how she fit into the family. Wonder why she was living with them? Though I guess that was pretty common back then. (not Walter S.), his middle name was Lowrie. I think you have done a great job of learning about the Goodfellows in Ireland, not to mention their early days in PA. I have been trying to research my husband's Irish family on his mother's side and it has been tough going. Have you had any luck identifying the ship they arrived on? I have done some searching online but have not come up with anything unnortunately. Wish I had more on that end of the descent line to share! Is there any research that you know of that needs to be done around Centre Co, PA or the other areas there that the Goodfellows settled? We are preparing to move there in the next months (soon as we finally sell our house). We own land in Union Co. (Lewisburg) and my husband is working there now on weekends. I'd be happy to do some hands on research out there one of our trips out if there is anything more than can be looked up! Hi Gabreille, My interest is primarily in the Goodfellow line. William Goodfellow who married Jane Allison was the 3rd child of David and Jane Goodfellow. The others were Thomas, David, an unknown daughter, Isaiah, and Elizabeth. My ancestor is Isaiah who married Mary "Polly" Antes. My cousin Lee Dorland (who got me interested in our family's history about 10 years ago) that the Goodfellow/Matthew Allison line is our only Irish heritage, and especially important to him as his middle name (and our Uncle's) is Allison named for that ancestor. I could give you more material from Juliette Goodfellow/Luke Dorland and on but probably that is too far out from your research. They moved to Hot Springs, NC when they retired and founded a girls college called Dorland Institute, which eventually merged with some other schools in the area and is now Warren Wilson College. I was interested that you have Juliette's deat place as Pueblo, CO. Luke Dorland had died two years earlier (22 Nov 1897) in Springfield, IL at the home of his son. I imagine Juliette was also staying with a relative when she died in CO (must try to track down that certificate now that I know where to look!). My g-grandfather Charles Dorland (Juliette's son) died in the South Colorado General Hospital in Pueblo in Oct 10, 1913 so perhaps that is who she was staying with when she died. This is an interesting bit on Juliette I got from my father's (Wayne Dorland) notes. He had written and published a memoir/history of the Dorland family in 1976, these notes were obtained from his Uncle Harold Green after publication so were not included in the book: Additional notes for Dorland book. Wayne E. Dorland: "Inez [Amelia Inez Dorland, d. of William Gardner Dorland, g-daughter of Luke Dorland and Juliette Goodfellow) indicates that at some point early in her youth she lived for a considerable period with her grandfather, the Rev. Luke Dorland, and her grandmother, Juliette Goodfellow Dorland. She says that Juliette was a rather tall woman, quite free in waving a long bony finger, who was well educated and who had travelled extensively. She apparently had almost as much to do as her husband with establishment of Scotia Seminary and Dorland Institute. She taught the girls sanitation, while Luke taught the men agriculture. Both believed in the students working to pay in a major degree for their education, a concept which still obtains today at Warren Wilson College, the outgrowth of Dorland Institute. Juliette, like her husband, was strongly religious. Inex recalls that there was no cooked food in their home on a Sunday. The Sabbath was reserved exclusively for rest and prayer." I have some more on Matthew Allison if you are interested but perhaps that too gets too far off track for your records. I have a copy of the application by Kathryn Rae Everson Wall using him as her ancestor for joining the DAR, however it is through a different child than my lineage (mine is through Jane Allison, hers is through Frederick Essik Allison. I would be happy to send a copy if you are interested. I will go through my notes a little more carefully this weekend to see what else might be different in my records. Nice to have found you! Now- Mark had some musings about the 1767 date for a marriage of David Goodfellow and Jane Bothwell> IF this is our Jane (and I also would calculate the odds of Walter Dorland thinking that his grandmother was named Bothwell as astronomical if it weren't the name of his ggrandmother instead) then 17 is a nice age for a girl to marry during that time and they could have either lost babies born before Thomas in about 1774 or they could have left adult children behind in Ireland when they immigrated in 1792. Not uncommon. However, I wonder where they did live after this marriage in Killeshandra because it doesn't appear to have been there. No baptisms of Goodfellow babies in Killeshandra. It looks like this David and Jane couple married there in 1767 and then moved somewhere else. Mark- on the DNA question - I don't know of any Goodfellow descendents from Isaiah's son Summerfield - the male line has completely died out. Same goes for Milton's line. We can try to locate a male descendent from Gideon (hopefully in PA?) or from Emory (moved to Australia). I'll try to track Gideon's line first - I'm finding research in Australia to be a lot more difficult. I've looked over my data on the Goodfellows and David Goodfellow, the father of my Isaiah and your William, died between 1810 and 1816 in Centre Co. In 1810 he was living in Howard Township and I'd love to locate a grave for him. His widow, Jane, moved on to OH with William so David is alone there somewhere. However, if you find any other Goodfellows in a Centre Co graveyard, I'd be interested in them as well. Do you know how far is it from Centre co to Clearfield Co? That's where Isaiah moved to and where he and his wife died. I had her in my notes with teh 1850 census for Luke and Juliette Dorland and did not know how she fit into the family. Wonder why she was living with them? Hi Gabreille, My interest is primarily in the Goodfellow line. William Goodfellow who married Jane Allison was the 3rd child of David and Jane Goodfellow. I was interested that you have Juliette's deat place as Pueblo, CO. Luke Dorland had died two years earlier (22 Nov 1897) in Springfield, IL at the home of his son. I imagine Juliette was also staying with a relative when she died in CO (must try to track down that certificate now that I know where to look!). My g-grandfather Charles Dorland (Juliette's son) died in the South Colorado General Hospital in Pueblo in Oct 10, 1913 so perhaps that is who she was staying with when she died. This is an interesting bit on Juliette I got from my father's (Wayne Dorland) notes. He had written and published a memoir/history of the Dorland family in 1976, these notes were obtained from his Uncle Harold Green after publication so were not included in the book: Additional notes for Dorland book. Wayne E. Dorland: "Inez [Amelia Inez Dorland, d. of William Gardner Dorland, g-daughter of Luke Dorland and Juliette Goodfellow) indicates that at some point early in her youth she lived for a considerable period with her grandfather, the Rev. Luke Dorland, and her grandmother, Juliette Goodfellow Dorland. She says that Juliette was a rather tall woman, quite free in waving a long bony finger, who was well educated and who had travelled extensively. She apparently had almost as much to do as her husband with establishment of Scotia Seminary and Dorland Institute. She taught the girls sanitation, while Luke taught the men agriculture. Both believed in the students working to pay in a major degree for their education, a concept which still obtains today at Warren Wilson College, the outgrowth of Dorland Institute. Juliette, like her husband, was strongly religious. Inex recalls that there was no cooked food in their home on a Sunday. The Sabbath was reserved exclusively for rest and prayer." I have some more on Matthew Allison if you are interested but perhaps that too gets too far off track for your records. I have a copy of the application by Kathryn Rae Everson Wall using him as her ancestor for joining the DAR, however it is through a different child than my lineage (mine is through Jane Allison, hers is through Frederick Essik Allison. Notes for Walter L. (Child 2)
Walter Dorland became a medical Dr. and signed his mother's death certificate in 1912. He made a very helpful error on the death certificate, saying that Juliett's mother's maiden name was Jane Bothwell which was actually her grandmother's maiden name. Her Mother's maiden name clearly was Jane Allison. We had despaired of making sure that Bothwell was, in fact, the Grandmother's name but this clinches it for me. How would he have ever heard the name if she wasn't an important family member? Juliette was 14 when her Grandmother died in 1836 and would have known her well and worked with her and talked to her every day until she died. Besides, the Bothwell family had a flash of prominence in English history which would have meant something to those people.
